This interview project explores the culture of remembrance among people of migrant backgrounds in Berlin and Leipzig. Ten women of different origins who are involved with the small memorial in Berlin Moabit against sexualized violence in war were interviewed. The interviews were presented as a two-channel video installation and published in written form in the catalog and online.
The memorial was originally proposed by Korean immigrants in Germany. Migrants generally bring cultural memories of their countries and regions of origin with them when they settle in a new place. As it gained acceptance within the local community, however, the memorial’s meaning expanded to encompass the remembrance of the oppression of all marginalized women and sexual minorities.
