Two-channel video installation
18’48”

This video installation consists of two projections. The first features a collage combining footage of blinking with photographs of historical sites and artefacts relating to South Korea’s colonial past. The second projection presents a similar collage using photographs of historical sites and artefacts in Japan, the suzerain state of Korea at that time.
The interval between each blink is as precise as clockwork, symbolising the passage of time. As we gaze from the present into the past, it recedes further and further while the present moves towards the future. With each blink, the number of photographs in one projection increases while the number in the other decreases. The two projections face each other as if engaged in a mutual gaze.
Before modernization, Japan and Korea were equal neighbors. However, the spread of Western civilization set them on different paths. This work presents historical perspectives from both countries, demonstrating that historical facts, though they may be the same, can be interpreted very differently depending on one’s point of view.
