Karl Liebknecht (left), Rosa Luxemburg (right)
These collages, created using screen printing techniques, feature portraits of Ernst Thälmann, Karl Liebknecht, and Rosa Luxemburg. These socialist activists were killed in the early 20th century because of their political beliefs. Later, they played a martyr-like role in East Germany, which was founded in 1949 at the beginning of the Cold War. Following German reunification, their images were incorporated into the country’s culture of remembrance in a fragmented way. Their image remains incomplete in today’s society.
