This work features an image of a woman whose body was burned in the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. The mass murder of civilians can never be justified under any circumstances. However, the strong national culture of remembrance surrounding Hiroshima and Nagasaki may hinder deeper engagement with Japan’s role as a perpetrator of war.
